These custom cast net videos
were produced and uploaded as a attempt to keep the tradition of cast
net making alive.
As mention in the videos your dropline must be longer than your cast
net webbing. Make sure you have 32 loops and knots on the first
row.
Complete three rows and then start the wideners. By skipping
every other knot you will end up with 16 wideners. Keep the next
row of wideners directly under the first, forming a column of 16
wideners the whole way down the cast net webbing.
On completion of the third row of
wideners start the skirting. The skirting is three rows down.
Continue this process until you have the desired length of cast net
webbing. End the webbing with skirting and the leads will come
out even.
Install your horn 8 loops
to all four sides. Remember to loop through more than 2 or 3
times through all the loops.
To ascertain the
number of leads needed; Start at the bottom of your net. Count
the loops from 1 widener to the next, adding 1 of those wideners.
Multiply that digit by 16. Giving you the number of loops and
knots around the bottom of your net webbing. Divide that sum by
4. This is the lead count.
What this
means is that you will have 3 loops and knots between each lead.
To truly get the maximum spread you will need to measure your cast
nets length. Multiply that by 2, which will give you the
diameter. Multiply this some by pie(3.14)
This is
the amount of lead line needed for your custom cast net Example(10'net=20'
diameter=62.8'circumference, round that up to 63 feet. The best
way to install the lead line is to spread the net out, then tie on the
lead line. But with practice tying the lead line while its
hanging works just as well.

Cast

Standard
nets for recreational fishing are good exercise
In
Ancient Rome, in a parody of fishing, a type of gladiator
called a retiarius or "net fighter" was armed with a trident
and a cast net.
In
